Attack Surface
The total set of points where an attacker can attempt to enter or extract data from an environment.

An organization's attack surface is the sum of all digital assets and entry points that could be exploited by a threat actor. This includes internet-facing systems, web applications, APIs, employee devices, third-party integrations, cloud services, email infrastructure, and even employee identities exposed through data breaches.
As organizations grow and adopt more SaaS tools, remote work, and cloud infrastructure, their attack surface expands — often faster than their visibility into it. Unmanaged or shadow IT assets are particularly dangerous as they represent blind spots that security teams may not be aware of.
Attack Surface Management (ASM) is the continuous practice of discovering, mapping, and reducing the external attack surface. Threat intelligence complements ASM by providing context on which exposed assets are being actively targeted.
